YOUNG SCOTTISH JAZZ MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 2018

This year’s competition is organised, and produced by Jazz from Scotland but is being held in partnership with Jazz at the Blue Lamp, Aberdeen, Aberdeen University & Glasgow Jazz Festival.

Jazz from Scotland with Glasgow International Jazz Festival will host the final on Wednesday 20th June 2018 at the Drygate Brewery

There shall be one overall winner who will hold the title for one calendar year

Application and Terms and Conditions:  Closing date: Friday 20th April 2018.

Please read the rules below carefully, notify your interest by email as requested to ensure we know to expect an application and then follow this up by completing / submitting your online application through this link https://www.jazzfromscotland.com/YSJM2018 or via our website, along with your recordings as requested by 5pm on Friday 20th April 2018.

IMPORTANT – Please include the following with your completed application:

  • A short biography detailing your musical experience to date  (approx. 100 words)
  • Recording of 2 tracks, each no more than 3 mins duration  (MP3, CD or Soundcloud link accepted)

N.B.  Recording may be solo or accompanied (e.g. with playalong) but MUST include an element of improvisation

RULES OF THE COMPETITION

  1. Applications must be received no later than 5pm on Friday 20th April 2018
  2. The preliminary round will be a blind adjudication i.e. the panel will not know who has applied or whom they are listening to and will choose a max. of 10 semi-finalists from entries received.
  3. All semi-finalists will be notified during the week beginning Monday 30th April 2018.
  4. All travel costs are the applicants own responsibility but accommodation for semi finals and finals will be arranged and paid by JFS if required.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants should be between 25yrs or under on 20th June 2018.
  • Applicants must be Scottish by birth or have been resident in Scotland for a min 2yrs and have a residential address.
  • Previous winners of YSJM are not eligible but previous finalists and semifinalists can re-apply.
  • Applicants must be available for the semi Final on Sunday May 13th in Aberdeen and for the final on Wed 20th June in Glasgow.

YSJM SEMI-FINAL: Sunday 13th May 2018 @ The Blue Lamp, Aberdeen – from 2.30pm
The semi final will be held in Aberdeen at the University and The Blue Lamp on Sun 13th May 2018.

  • Applicants should ideally be able to arrive in Aberdeen on the evening of Sat 12th May to allow them to relax and prepare for an all day event on Sunday 13th May.
  • Accommodation and a meal will be provided on the Saturday evening if wished.
  • Sunday 13th May will include an introductory session plus rehearsals / sound checks with the house band on the morning of Sunday May 13th.
  • The competition will start at the Blue Lamp at 2.30pm and should be finished by 5.30pm
  • Each semi finalist shall perform a max 10min programme of his or her own choice either solo or with the JFS resident rhythm section.
  • A panel of professional jazz musicians, educators and promoters will judge performances.
  • A maximum of 5 finalists will be chosen and announced on the night.

YSJM FINAL: Wednesday, June 20th, 2018 @ The Drygate Brewery, Glasgow – from 8pm

  • The final will be held at The Drygate Brewery as part of the Glasgow International Jazz Festival.
  • Finalists will perform in concert for 10 – 12 minutes each.
  • A professional rhythm section will be provided.
  • You should be available for most of the day, as rehearsal times will be allocated from early afternoon on the day.   Times will be advised in advance.
  • A panel of professional jazz musicians, educators and promoters will judge performances.
  • There shall be one overall winner who will hold the title for one calendar year.

YSJM PRIZES

As well as the trophy and publicity, the YSJM 2018 winner will receive opportunities to perform at a number of festivals and venues throughout the following year as well as an invitation to perform at the following year’s YSJM final.
